1. Develop a Consistent Hair Regimen
A consistent hair regimen includes regular trimmings, washing, conditioning, & hair treatments. This can all be seen as preventative care to hair breakage.
Keeping up with trimmings prevents split ends and breakage from traveling up the hair shaft.
Regular washing and conditioning encourages a clean healthy scalp and moisturized hair. Using a clarifying shampoo once-twice a month can clear product build up & keep hair pores from becoming clogged.
Conditioning encourages smooth, moisturized hair and restores hair elasticity.
Hair treatments reinforce hair strength & elasticity as well, further preventing any hair breakage.
2. Focus on retaining hair
In order to increase hair length, you want to focus on retaining the hair that you already have. Hair grows at least 1/4 - 1/2 an inch each month. Most do not see the growth as their hair breaks off just as fast. Low manipulation & gentle detangling prevents this breakage and helps retain length.
Before detangling, make sure the hair is wet and has slip ( a conditioner or oil will suffice). Gently detangle starting from the ends working toward the roots. This will allow much easier detangling and help prevent splitting the ends.
Curly hair is fragile. Over manipulation, constant twisting, and styling, can weaken the hair and cause breakage.
3. Scalp Massages
Hair growth starts within the scalp at the hair follicle. It is actually the only living part of the hair. New hair is created through using nutrients from supplies from blood to the hair follicle. Scalp massages help stimulate longer thicker hair by encouraging increased blood flow & nutrients to the hair follicles.
4. Invest in a High Quality Hair Growth Oil
A quality hair growth oil will have the essential nutrients and fatty acids that are the building blocks of hair. Hair is 95% of a protein called keratin which is naturally produced by the body. The hair also needs certain vitamins and minerals, which are not naturally produced. High quality oils will contain these multiple vitamins and minerals such as vitamin Bs & E, and the minerals zinc & iron. Applying this at least twice a week will encourage healthy hair growth.
5. Maintain a Healthy Diet
In order for your body to produce keratin, it breaks down protein from your daily diet. Making sure your diet consists of the proper protein intake, plant based or animal, can help with growing your hair.
Water also plays an important role with hair growth. Keeping the hair hydrated with water is just as important on the inside as it is the outside. Drinking your bodyweight in ounces daily helps keep your body and hair hydrated. It also helps with blood circulation, stimulating blood flow and nutrients to the hair and scalp.
6. Add a Daily Vitamin
Your daily diet does affect your hair growth. If you’re not in taking enough iron, you actually can experience hair loss. Vitamins A,C,D,E,K and B-complex are all essential vitamins that can affect hair growth. Taking a daily vitamin ensures that you are getting those necessary nutrients and prevents hair loss.
7. Avoid Constant Heat
Frequent exposure to heat can result in hair damage. The curl pattern will become less defined, frizzy, or even limp & straight.
Heat can also break down the hair fibers and take much needed moisture out of the hair. This causes the hair to become dry, brittle, and prone to breakage.
8. Proper Scalp Care
A healthy scalp means healthy hair! If pores become clogged, it may inhibit proper blood flow and nutrients from getting to the hair follicles that produce new hair growth. Keeping your scalp moisturized and clean from buildup will allow hair to easily grow. Just like good soil will promote healthy produce, a good, healthy scalp will produce strong healthy hair.
9. Protective Styling
Keeping your hair in a protective style not only helps to reduce manipulation, but it also protects your hair, especially your ends from free radicals from the elements and further breakage. Before placing your hair in a protective style, make sure your hair is properly moisturized and sealed with a good oil or butter. Hair can dry out in a protective style and actually cause more damage if this is not done properly. Make sure tension is at a minimal as well at the roots and around the edges to prevent breakage and alopecia.
10. A good conditioner
A good conditioner will make a world of a difference when growing your hair. It keeps the hair soft and moisturized which ultimately helps with retaining hair length. Hair conditioner also moisturizes the hair follicles which can also promote new hair growth.
